DIY Piano Moving: 5 Things You Need To Know

Moving is one of the most stressful life events. Unfortunately, you have a big, bulky piano to move, which makes it even more nerve-wracking for you. Luckily, with a little bit of advice, things don't have to be as chaotic as you think.

1. Make Sure the Keyboard Lid Is Properly Secured.

One of the most common mistakes that is made by individuals who try to move pianos on their own is forgetting to close and secure the keyboard lid before transporting the piano. This is a very important step because if it is not done, the lid could come open during transport, potentially risking damage to the piano keys. If the lid does not have a lock on it, then stretch tape, rope or something similar can be used to secure the lid so that it stays closed during the move.

2. Wrap It with Care.

Before you start moving the piano, you will need to make sure that you protect it from getting damaged. Whether you use bubble wrap or multiple layers of thick blankets, this will protect it from getting chipped, scuffed, etc. along the way. Make sure to pay extra attention to the edges and corners of the piano since these areas will be the most vulnerable to damage.

3. Try to Avoid Tilting the Piano on Its Side.

Because a piano is so large, it may be difficult to get it outside of the house without tilting it. This is often the hardest part of moving it. However, it is important that the instrument remain upright as much as it can so as to avoid any damage to the inside mechanics. If you can't fit it through a door opening, try to remove the door from the hinges and even the door jamb to see if that works. You may even try seeing if the piano will fit through a large window. Try all alternatives before you tilt the piano on its side.

4. Enlist Plenty of Help.

Don't try to move a piano on your own. They are heavy musical instruments. Depending on the type of piano that you have, it can weigh anywhere from 300 to 1,300 pounds. So, make sure you have several of your strongest friends to help you out so that you don't break your back in the process of trying to move

5. Don't Hesitate to Call the Pros.

When you don't have anyone who can help you or simply don't think you can handle it on your own, don't hesitate to request the services of an expert piano moving company. After all, it's not easy to move a piano on your own. This is especially true if you have never done it before and are not trained to do so. When looking for a moving company, though, don't just rely on anyone. Call a service who has specific experience in moving pianos, as they'll be more likely to take better care of your precious musical instrument.
